What is Birthright?
Birthright is a pregnancy resource center where anyone concerned about an unplanned or untimely pregnancy can find help as near as the telephone. Birthright offers services to help the woman with her pregnancy, both materially and through community referrals.
Birthright starts by listening with love and understanding. We don't make decisions for you and we don't pressure you. We work with you to meet your needs.
Birthright of Harford County is staffed by trained volunteers prepared to offer loving, personal, confidential help to those involved, whether they are single or married, regardless of age, race, income, or religion. Together, we will assess the situation and explore alternatives available.
Birthright of Harford County has served thousands of people in Harford, Cecil, and Baltimore Counties in Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania, for over 34 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to schedule an appointment?
You do not have to schedule an appointment, but we prefer that you do. We fit walk-in’s into our schedule whenever possible, but by making an appointment you can ensure an opening will be available when you arrive.
How long will my appointment take?
The length of time varies depending on the services you request and the questions you have. Generally, you can plan to spend about 30 minutes with our lay counselor for a pregnancy test.
What kind of pregnancy test do you offer?
Birthright offers a free, self-administered, clinical pregnancy test. This test is designed to determine the presence of the pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotrophin (hcg), in urine. The manufacturer states that this test is 97% to 99% accurate seven to ten days after conception. This test will offer a positive or negative indication of pregnancy, but a final diagnosis can only be made by a doctor.
How much do you charge?
All Birthright services are provided free of charge, regardless of your income level.
Are you a Catholic organization?
No. Birthright was founded in 1968 by a Catholic woman, and we do receive some financial support from local Catholic churches, but we are interdenominational. This means that we serve everyone who asks, regardless of their religious affiliation. All are welcome at Birthright.

Our Needs and How You Can Help
We need to get the Birthright message out to the community.
Educating the public about pregnancy, abortion, and the related issues will help people understand the problems we are facing today. It may also deter someone from getting into a difficult situation. Those familiar with Birthright's services can be ambassadors for Birthright, letting someone in need know there is help and where to get it. Could you provide our literature at your place of business, church, or social club?
We need financial assistance.
Birthright is supported solely by individuals and a few local churches. We receive no State or Federal money. Our office is run by volunteers.
We need material assistance.
Materials listed on the right side of this page are always in demand.
We need office volunteers.
To volunteer, give four hours during the day or two hours in the evening, one day a week. Volunteers are trained to answer the phone and assist clients. The only qualification needed is a heart willing to love unconditionally.
Above all, we need prayers.
Prayers that we continue to walk in God's will, and that we always put God on display through our words and action. Prayers that those in need may hear about Birthright and contact us for support and help. |
